As part of the preparation for the Asian Games 2018 to be held in Jakarta and Palembang, the Special Administrative Area of Jakarta instructed acceleration of the construction of the Inner Jakarta LRT network. The first phase of the project to be delivered before the Asian Games in August 2018 included a 5 kilometre elevated track with 6 stations and a multistorey depot acting as a Transit Oriented Development project.

Emrail, in joint operation with PT Wijaya Karya Beton (Persero) Tbk, was awarded the contract for the section of the mainline and depot trackworks from Kelapa Gading to Velodrome in February 2017 and began the design and procurement stages for the project immediately. Physical works began in November 2017 and is expected to be completed by August 2018 with the first train set being delivered in April 2018 to the site for testing and commissioning purposes.
